The pearling industry thrived in Broome, with up to 400 Pearling Luggers docked there until the mid 20th century. People from Japan, China, Malaysia, Europe and elsewhere were brought into work on the boats and dive for pearl shells. When the pearl harvests would finish the traditional cultural festivities and celebrations would begin.
In 1970 the community of Broome decided to turn the Shinju Matsuri into a festival to not only acknowledge the pearling industry, but to also showcase Broome's beauty, hisotry and community to the outside world. From then on Shinju Matsuri has been a festival that presents a talented music and arts industry unique to Broome. |
