Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation calls on the Federal Government to fast-track the processing of applications for Rural Transaction Centres (RTCs) to maximise their ability to leverage off other initiatives.

The Traditional Knowledge Recording Project (TKRP) has joined with people from western Cape York to ensure the rich heritage of the Wik language groups is preserved for the future. Using video cameras and a multi-media database, the knowledge of the elders will be recorded and catalogued in a manner that maintains the integrity of the culture’s oral traditions.

Expectant Indigenous mothers and their babies in North Queensland will have greater access to ante-natal and post-natal care at a new 24-bed accommodation facility in Cairns. The Australian Government has provided more than $5 million for the facility.

- NT Safe Houses 30 January 2009
Doors begin to open on safe places across the NT. The Australian and Northern Territory Governments today opened a women's safe house and a men's cooling off place in the remote community of Ngukurr, as part of a roll-out of 22 safe places across the Northern Territory as part of the Northern Territory Emergency Response. Ngukurr is one of 15 remote communities in the NT to receive safe places under a joint initiative between the Australian and Northern Territory Governments to improve the safety and protection of Indigenous children and their families.

We are delighted that along with the Clontarf Sporting Academy the mighty Garnduwa are sending a group of representatives to take part in the Yorta Yorta trading floor and sporting activities to follow. Garnduwa is the peak Indigenous sporting body in the Kimberley and is responsible for the development of local, regional, state and national participation in sport and recreational activities by indigenous people.
