Indigenous Environmental Traineeships

The Weeli Wolli Creek Co-Management Board in conjunction with Rio Tinto Iron Ore and the Department of Agriculture has created an opportunity for four Indigenous Environmental Traineeships to be offered a one year Traineeship to the Nyiyaparli and Martu Idja Banyjima groups (1 male and 1 female from each group 4 in total of any age) at the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Hope Downs Mine Site and Weeli Wolli Creek and its environs.

The successful Trainees will gain a Certificate 2 in Conservation and Land Management. They may then progress in further qualifications in Conservation and Land Management.
Job Description

Full training and performing of designated tasks under supervision, which may include:

  • Recognising flora and fauna;
  • Seed collection;
  • Natural area restoration works;
  • Animal trapping;
  • Following OHS Standards; and
  • Recording cultural information about country with Nyiyaparli and Martu Idja Banyjima Elders.

The Successful Applicants will need to display:

  • A desire to start, participate in and finish the Traineeship;
  • The ability to work and interact in a team situation;
  • Self motivation;
  • A willingness to learn and to use their initiative;
  • Good oral communication and interpersonal skills;
  • An acceptance to live and work away from home from time to time; and
  • Current C class driver's licence or equivalent (if not currently held, must be acquired prior to commencement).
