Carol Martin is the first Indigenous woman elected to any Parliament in Australia. She was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Kimberley in the Western Australian Parliament on the 10th February 2001
Prior to her election Carol had been active in the Kimberley community working as a social worker and counsellor. Working in Derby allowed her to take an active role in the local and wider Kimberley community and the struggles, stories and Laws of her people profoundly influenced her in her daily activities.
Since completing a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Curtin University in 1993, Carol has worked with many organisations and projects throughout the Kimberley region, particularly as a consultant, counsellor and trainer.
Carol has also contributed to the community with her involvement in local government and various organisations. Some of these achievements include being a Shire Councillor for Derby and the West Kimberley, a member of the National Association for Loss and Grief in Western Australia, a member of the Industry Training Advisory Board and a member of the Support Committee for Young Women's Health Wise.
In her spare time Carol enjoys fishing, hunting, camping, reading, and is a keen darts player. She is also a talented artist and examples of her art work can been seen hanging in the Governor General's office, and at Curtin University in the Centre for Aboriginal Studies.
Carol was born in Subiaco, and lived in Perth until she moved to Broome at the age of 15 to live with her mother - a decision that changed the entire direction of her life. Carol has lived in the Kimberley ever since, and settled in Derby in 1982. She met her husband Brian there and has been married for 19 years, with two teenage children and two granddaughters.
The seat of the Kimberley is based in the north west of Western Australia. It includes the towns of Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Kununurra and Wyndham. The main industries in the region include pastoral, tourism, horticulture and pearling.
