My current role
Health Entrepreneur RegionAustralia-wide operationMy backgroundI worked initially in retail pharmacy before joining the drug company Glaxo Australia where I rose to the position of Marketing Services Manager responsible for new product launches, sales training, marketing planning and government liaison. During this time I maintained an interest in rugby union (through the Victorian Rugby Union) and community development (through Apex Australia). In a voluntary capacity I attained the position of Zone President and National PR Director for Apex Australia. I was responsible for relocating a mentally retarded children's center from the inner Melbourne suburbs to a new site and also was Chairman of the organising committee for an International conference under the aegis of the World Council of Young Men's Service Clubs. Through my involvement with Apex I was appointed as a Social Development Consultant to the Social Welfare Commission promoting the Australian Assistance Plan from 1973-75. I then became the first Director of Public Relations for the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and followed this with my own consulting business in Canberra until 1987 when for family reasons I opened a new pharmacy in Queanbeyan, NSW. The Tiwi Health Board, in 2000 presented the opportunity to see what could be done with improved pharmacy service and this lead to the establishment of the first Aboriginal health service owned and operated pharmacy business in Australia. The company Mirrijini Pty Ltd was established to promote the concept to other places and to provide employment and training opportunities for Tiwi people. During this time I became aware of the broader need for social development in Aboriginal communities and have been working on plans for reform in this area over the past two years. I am willing to share my ideas with others on either pharmacy services or social development in remote Aboriginal communities. My current priorities are: - Promoting a greater understanding of the role of public relations in marketing, government liaison and lobbying activities. - Conducting social entrepreneurial activities that will enhance the opportunities for Aboriginal people, especially those living in remote communities. - Acting as an advocate for remote living Aboriginal people who want to improve their social capital and opportunity for children in the future. - Promoting the consumers rights in sourcing pharmacy services and ensuring all developments are directed towards assistance to the consumer. - Developing systems to improve the quality use of medicines in remote Aboriginal communities.
