Timmy Djawa Burarrwanga

My current role

Principal: Bawaka Tourism, Chairman of Yirrkala Dhanbul Community Association

Region

Northern Territory

Biography

Timmy belongs to the Gumatj Clan. He was born at Yirrkala and is homeland is Bawaka in Port Bradshaw, North East Arnhem Land.

He is currently the Chairman of the Yirrkala Dhanbul Community Association Inc and the Senior Supervisor of Yolngu staff, Cultural Adviser and Liaison Officer of the Landcare Department of the Association.

Timmy is also a board member of the Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation Inc, a director of Northern Building Consultants and a member of the Yirrkala School Council. He has a keen interest in indigenous health, education and social issues particularly substance abuse and misuse, domestic violence and family health.

In an effort to increase his knowledge and experience in issues that are important to him he has completed certificates in resource management and tourism and he is currently studying Certificate IV in Business.

Timmy has a vision that he can create a successful tourism business at Bawaka that will benefit the community and the region. One of the most valuable assets of this proposed business is the people - they are willing to share their rich cultural knowledge and experience with others and by doing increase understanding and reconciliation with the wider community and create opportunities to enhance their lives through employment, on the job training, working towards financial independence and take responsibility for their own futures.

Whilst Timmy and his family are passionate about making this business viable, they also recognise the fact that they do not yet have the skills required to run a successful business. With the assistance of organisations such as Yirrkala Dhanbul Community Association Inc., the Department of Business, Industry and Resource Development, the Northern Territory Tourist Commission, the Department of Community Development, Sports and Cultural Affairs, the Department of Education and Training and Alcan Gove they plan to start small, learn and slowly grow the business.
