Boys from the Bush

Boys from the Bush have been supported at each of the ISX trading floors. The proposal before the Yawuru Trading Floor is funding for an international marketing strategy for Boys from the Bush products. Milton James will be presenting this proposal via video conference from Cairns at 3pm on May 19.

Background

Boys from the Bush is a behaviour modification program for young indigenous offenders. It uses the distillation and sale of eucalyptus and melaleuca oils as its mode of operation.

It is a program developed by Milton James, formerly a Family Service Officer of the Department of Families and Community Care. It was developed as a sentencing option for young indigenous offenders not responding to mainstream services.

It solves many of the issues that lead to young indigenous people offending in the first place such as poverty, boredom, unemployment, limited life skills, poor education, poor social control, peer pressure, drugs and alcohol abuse. Young people are engaged within an enterprise that provides them with income, work, creativity, development of self esteem and confidence.

Boys from the Bush has unleashed entrepreneurship that will arm young people with the skills to seize future business and employment opportunities. This is the only community based program for young indigenous offenders of its type.

The program works in cooperation with community justice groups, courts and the Cape York and Torres Strait office of the Department of Family and Community Services.
